PSHE Curriculum
At Crick Primary School we are committed to the mental, physical and emotional health and wellbeing of our whole school community. We believe that PSHE is crucial to give children the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, independent lives and to become informed, active and responsible citizens.
PSHE is taught through discussions, circle time, investigations and problem-solving activities. It is taught as a discreet lesson but is also embedded in all other subjects, through events and in assemblies. Our whole school values also provide PSHE learning opportunities and discussions.
We offer children the opportunity to hear visiting speakers, such as health workers, police, and representatives from the local church. The Life Education Team also visit school annually to further develop the children’s knowledge and understanding in a fun environment but also to retrieve prior information learnt.
RSHE Curriculum
As part of PSHE we also deliver RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) and Drug Education to all children. All this work is age-appropriate and is centred around relationships and empowering children to make positive choices. As children reach Upper KS2 they will begin to learn about the changes they will face both physically and emotionally as they head towards puberty. Furthermore children will learn about the reproductive process of conception relevant to their age of development. Parents will be informed when RSE is to be delivered and will be given an outline of the content for each year group. The Life Education Team deliver workshops for Year 4 to 6 on RSE.
Early Years Foundation Stage
PSHE is taught in the Foundation Stage through Personal, social and emotional development. It involves helping children to develop a positive sense of themselves, and others; to form positive relationships and develop respect for others; to develop social skills and learn how to manage their feelings; to understand appropriate behaviour in groups; and to have confidence in their own abilities.
We encourage healthy eating throughout the school and recommend healthy snacks at playtimes. Key Stage 1 and Reception children have access to fresh fruit or vegetables daily.
Mental Health Curriculum
Alongside our PSHE Curriculum, we have designed a Mental Health Curriculum based on the needs of our pupils. Every child in the school learns about their emotions, how to deal with emotions, how to develop a growth mindset, how to use meta cognition in their learning, team building and social skills and the importance of Mindfulness.
In school we use the following phrases to support Growth Mindset:
